Protect Your Car from Harmful Sun Exposure with a Carport

Jun 15, 2018 | Carports

Oklahoma summers are famous for being hot and sunny. And while we can protect ourselves from the sun’s rays by going inside and turning up the A/C, your car has no such option. Most people aren’t aware of the ways that long-term direct sun exposure can harm your car, both inside and out.

Leaving your car out in the sun all day can have a number of detrimental effects. Most of them come down to two things: heat and radiation. Exposing your car to constant high temperatures and UV radiation leave it vulnerable to additional tire and body wear, fading paint, and interior damage.

On the outside, the biggest problem to watch out for is fading paint and bodywork. Long-term sun exposure can and does fade paint, even modern paints made with UV protectants. Furthermore, if your car has plastic exterior parts, those parts will fade faster than the surrounding painted areas – leading to that familiar white, chalky finish covering the plastic.

Inside the car, sun and heat will cause damage as well. Long-term sun exposure will quickly fade fabrics and interior plastics on the dash, seats, steering wheel, and more. High heat is also known to warp plastic panels over time. This is a big problem for interiors with inlaid pieces or panels that sit flush with each other, as warping can cause them to buckle or change shape in unattractive ways. If your car has a leather interior, the sun can cause it to dry out and crack, which means you’ll need an expensive re-upholstery job.

Another less-noticed effect of sun exposure is on your tires, gaskets, and other rubber or flexible parts of your car, such as sunroof and window seals. High heat and UV rays can cause cracks in the rubber, meaning leaky, brittle tires, seals and hoses. These effect can take a while to show up, but if you have a seasonal car such as a farm truck or RV they will certainly show up sooner or later.

So what can you do to protect your investment and keep it looking like new? Simple – park out of the sun! A carport or shelter is the best way to protect your car from heat, radiation, and exposure damage. Because carports are far less expensive than garages and can be placed on almost any surface, they’re a cost-effective means of protection for cars, RVs, boats, and more. Of course they also protect against hail, debris, rain, snow, and other inclement weather too.
